ABRI and several member organisations featured in an article in The Age newspaper on 21 July 2011 entitled ‘Dead and buried dangerously’. The journalist, Cynthia Karena, highlighted the large number of batteries that are thrown away each year and the potential risks associated with disposal in landfill. ABRI’s CEO suggested that regulation of handheld batteries may be required under national product stewardship legislation unless a voluntary program can be established with widespread industry support.
