At Friday’s Meeting of Environment Ministers, batteries once again on the agenda with the Joint Media release in support of battery stewardship. “Following the success of televisions, computer, tyre and oil products, Ministers also agree to fast track the development of new products stewardship schemes for government, such as photovoltaic solar panels and batteries”.
This highlights the window of opportunity facing industry to play a leadership role in 2018 to create a voluntary scheme for handheld batteries. The alternative will see a more onerous regulated approach through inclusion of batteries in the review of the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme (NTCRS).
Today’s media release also lays the ground work for much bigger focus on Large energy storage batteries as the Sustainability Victoria move forward with scoping a national scheme for energy storage. To read the media release, click here.
