Recent analysis by U.K. research firm Circular Energy Storage titled “The lithium-ion battery end-of-life market 2018-2025,” finds that the movement of batteries to China means North American and European companies are at a disadvantage. One conclusion made is that this exodus of batteries to China radically reduces volumes of waste batteries available for processing onshore and prevents investment in onshore processing industry. Clearly this also has implications for Australia and suggests that the sooner the proposed National Battery Stewardship Scheme is established the better. The scheme will provide greater certainty for investment in local battery waste processing operations and reduce our exposure to possible China ‘bans’ on waste battery exports in the future.
