Export of alkaline batteries for recycling

Posted on: April 17th, 2014

TES-AMM Australia Pty Ltd has received a permit from the Australian Government to export up to 120 tonnes of alkaline and zinc carbon batteries for recycling. The batteries will be transported by sea from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle to the port of Barcelona in Spain, and then by land to Recupyl Espana’s recycling facility.

Alkaline and zinc carbon batteries are classified as hazardous under the Hazardous Waste (Regulation of Exports and Imports) Act 1989, and therefore require an export permit. There is currently no facility to recycle these batteries in Australia.
