Managing ULAB in handheld battery collections

Posted on: December 20th, 2013

ABRI has developed a one-page guide to managing used lead acid batteries (ULAB) received through handheld battery collections. These are generally small sealed lead acid batteries used in emergency exit signs, security systems or telecommunications, but occasionally consumers (incorrectly) bring in a larger battery.

All ULAB are recyclable. However, under the Australian Dangerous Goods Code and associated transport regulations they must be packaged and transported separately from other battery types. Handheld battery collection programs are also not equipped to handle automotive and industrial batteries.

The guidelines can be downloaded here.
