At their meeting on 15 July Environment Ministers agreed to continue negotiations with industry on a voluntary stewardship program, but to refine the focus to hazardous and rechargeable battery types. In their statement Ministers noted the work being undertaken on pilot collection initiatives, including those for power tool batteries and emergency lighting batteries.
ABRI will continue to advocate for an ‘all battery’ recycling program because this would offer the most convenient and environmentally-responsible solution for consumers. Prior to the meeting ABRI urged Ministers to allow no more than a 6 month period in which to reach agreement on a voluntary program. If negotiations are unsuccessful within this time work should commence on the development of regulations under the Product Stewardship Act. ABRI’s media release provides further detail.
