Members of MobileMuster, the official recycling program of the mobile phone industry, recently agreed to apply for accreditation of the scheme under the Product Stewardship Act.
The Product Stewardship Act came into effect on 8 August 2011 and provides a framework to address environmental, health and safety impacts of a product or material across its full lifecycle – from manufacture to disposal.
The accreditation of voluntary arrangements recognises and encourages product stewardship while minimising unnecessary regulation. It also provides the community with confidence that accredited voluntary arrangements have the capability to achieve real and effective outcomes.
Members of MobileMuster include Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, HTC Huawei, ZTE, Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, Virgin Mobile and Force Technology. The first applications for certification are due on 15 November.
