Discussions at the recent ICBR highlighted the rapidly growing battery market for both handheld devices and for large battery storage systems.
In this context Australia can continue with its very poor performance on battery recovery (lead acid batteries aside), or we can realize an opportunity to create a strong industry based on a circular economy of battery recovery and reuse. The progress needed to capitalize on this opportunity can only occur if we step up and take action at both the policy and industry level.
To further inform policy development towards battery stewardship, the QLD Department of Environment and Heritage Protection has sponsored ABRI and the Institute of Sustainable Futures to conduct interviews with key industry players who attended the Congress. This report will be released in the coming months, however in the mean time, the following article provides some preliminary insights: 171004-ABRI News – ICBR
