1.2025 Summit - Meet top local and international experts

ABRI is pleased to announce the final agenda items for the third 2025 Australian Battery Recycling & Manufacturing Summit:

  • A case study on lithium battery recycling in China and the journey towards net zero with JC New Energy Technology. Berry Yang, Thomas Chen and Tingting Fu will share their experience in developing circular economy, sustainability strategies and R&D for the new energy vehicle industry supply chain in China.

  • Michael Robinson of Cyan Ventures will share his observations on investment and sustainability trends and implications for clean technology especially battery recycling. Cyan Ventures is a sustainability project development and advisory firm which develops and incubates new technologies and markets to accelerate the breadth and pace of the transition to a nature positive, low carbon, green economy. Michael specializes in clean tech manufacturing, focusing on batteries, solar, wind, and transmission. He possesses an in-depth understanding of regulatory reform, workforce development, and innovation necessary for the net zero transition.

2. ABRI Executive Committee Update & Industry Priorities

The ABRI Executive Committee line up has changed following the AGM and some members reconsidering how to best commit resources to support ABRI. The new Executive Committee provides great coverage of battery chemistries and different segments of the battery value chain. The Committee is:

  • Troy Rowe, ReSource (Treasurer)

  • Garbis Simonian, Weston Aluminium

  • Libby Chaplin, Battery Stewardship Council

The Committee is holding a face-to-face strategy workshop on 27 June and will host a session on industry priorities at the 2025 Australian Battery Recycling and Manufacturing Summit. Further information will be provided in upcoming member Bulletins on how to add your voice into the development of industry priorities. The Committee looks forward to meeting with everyone at the Summit and building on ABRI’s continuing success as the industry faces a step change in operations to support the clean energy transition.

3. Government announcements impacting battery industry

The following announcements have come through ABRI’s inbox in the past week and are likely to be of interest to members.

🔋Queensland Government has opened applications for $2 million in funding for the Local Government Battery Collection program. Applications close 10 July. More information

🔋Commonwealth Cheaper Home Batteries Program policy paper

🔋Adoption of international and overseas standards in regulatory frameworks. The Productivity Commission is providing advice to the Commonwealth Treasurer to support reductions in red tape and streamlining regulation through harmonisation and national occupational licensing. This includes a national licensing scheme for electrical trades. Interested members should provide advice to the Productivity Commission on these issues by 6 June. ABRI is exploring making a submission on issues such as a battery passport, mandatory producer responsibility and harmonised waste tracking.

4. Building the Industry’s Voice - out and about with ABRI

ABRI CEO, Katharine Hole, is discussing battery recycling and industry priorities at:

  • NSW EPA on the status of the review into NSW intrastate battery waste tracking exemptions (23 May)

  • Cwlth Dept of Climate Change, Energy and the Environment to discuss battery end of life management and the Cheaper Home Batteries Program (27 May)

  • The Waste and Recycling Contractors Association Industry Conference (13 June)

  • Energy + Circularity Summit - Resources, Energy and Innovation Forum in Dubbo - the centre of the NSW Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (19 June)
