1.2025 Summit wrap up & presentations

The 2025 Australian Battery Recycling & Manufacturing Summit highlighted Australia's often overlooked clean energy transition and economic opportunity: battery recycling. It was about pathways for turning momentum into action.

Why it matters: ABRI members, representing the entire battery supply chain, are at the forefront of building a vibrant, circular industry. The discussions laid the groundwork for a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous battery-powered future— one that reduces emissions, creates jobs, and boosts exports.

With over $100 million already being invested to grow this sector, the Summit was a reminder: it’s time for governments and the broader community to celebrate the achievements of local industry and acknowledge the exciting path being forged to underpin the clean energy transition. Identifying priorities and mapping out action steps are more important than ever.

Summit presentations are available for ABRI members in the member only section of the ABRI website. To access the presentations, enter your member login and go to the Document Archive page.

2. Developing used lithium battery packaging & transport guide

The ABRI DG Working Group is developing a Used Lithium Battery Packaging and Transport Guide. The most recent draft version is available for ABRI members only to review and provide feedback. ABRI Members are invited to provide feedback by Friday 22 August by email to secretariat@batteryrecycling.org.au.

This working draft uses the same framework as the ABRI used lead acid battery guidelines to build a consistent set of tools for industry to support safety and understanding of regulatory requirements. The Guide is to help users navigate regulatory requirements for packing and transporting used lithium batteries. It directs users to relevant regulations, but users are responsible for ensuring their own compliance.

As this guide is still under development, it is not yet in use. The Working Group has identified several points that require clarification with regulators, such as procedures related to transporting EV batteries for servicing, reuse, and repurposing. ABRI is currently contacting regulatory agencies to discuss the content and obtain further information.
